Line of Events

Ellwood Curtis’s college dream crashes on a two-lane Florida highway. Bearing the brunt of an innocent misstep, he is sentenced to the underworld of Nickel Academy, a brutal correctional facility sunk deep into the Jim Crow South. He runs into another ward, Turner, who has seen it all. The two black teenagers form an alliance: Turner offers basic survival advice, Ellwood clings to his optimistic outlook. Against the backdrop of the burgeoning Civil Rights Movement, Ellwood and Turner’s existence seems far removed from the polished oratory of the Rev. Martin Luther King. Despite Nickel’s brutality, Ellwood struggles to maintain his humanity, awakening a new vision in Turner.
